Weight

# Steel Coil Weight Calculator

Calculate coil weight and the wound strip length from outer diameter, inner diameter, width and strip thickness — with that grade's own measured density. A real GET form: computes correctly with JavaScript off.

   Coil Outer diameter mm

 Inner diameter (eye) mm

Common eyes: 508 or 610 mm.

 Strip width mm

 Strip thickness mm

Material Steel grade (optional — search by number or designation) Leave blank to use a generic class estimate instead.More than one grade matches — pick the exact one below (using the material class for now):

- DC01 (1.0322)
- DC01 (1.0330)
- DC01 (1.0338)

Generic estimate 7.85 **g/cm³**

Steel (generic) — EN 10025-1 mass convention

 Material class (fallback — used only when no grade above is chosen) Generic (no grade selected)Steel (generic) — 7.85 g/cm³Stainless steel, austenitic (generic) — 7.9 g/cm³Non-ferrous (trade conversion)Titanium (commercially pure) — 4.51 g/cm³Aluminium (generic) — 2.7 g/cm³Copper (generic) — 8.93 g/cm³Brass CuZn40 (60/40, generic) — 8.52 g/cm³ Generic values are class averages, never a substitute for a grade's own measured density.

## Coil weight — frequently asked

How is the strip length derived from the coil dimensions?

The wound cross-section is the annulus between outer and inner diameter; dividing its area by the strip thickness gives the length: L = π (OD² − ID²) ⁄ (4 t).

Why must the inner diameter be smaller than the outer diameter?

Equal diameters would mean zero wound material. The calculator refuses that input and names the bound instead of returning a meaningless zero.

Does the calculation account for gaps between the wraps?

No — it assumes a tightly wound coil, the standard mill convention. A loosely wound or telescoped coil weighs the same but measures a larger outer diameter, so measure OD on a tight coil.
