Chromium & Nickel Equivalent Calculator
Welding

Chromium and nickel equivalent (WRC-1992)

Calculates the two constitution-diagram coordinates for stainless steel weld metal — the chromium equivalent and the nickel equivalent — on WRC-1992 or on the Schaeffler diagram. Neither returns a ferrite reading here: the Ferrite Number is read off the WRC-1992 diagram itself or measured on the weld per ANSI/AWS A4.2 or ISO 8249, and Schaeffler's percent-ferrite lines are drawn on its figure with no published equation.

Constitution diagram
Evaluating Cr-eq = Cr + Mo + 0.7·Nb · Ni-eq = Ni + 35·C + 20·N + 0.25·Cu — the diagram travels with the coordinates, so the result stays reproducible.
Where the chemistry comes from
Leave blank to use a generic class estimate instead. Using the specified composition of 00H22N24M4TCu (1.4462). Switch to manual entry to type your own analysis.

Specified composition of 00H22N24M4TCu (1.4462)

ElementSpecificationUsedSource
Cr21,0-23,022 %werkstoffnummer_catalog
Mo2,50-3,503 %werkstoffnummer_catalog
Nbnot specified by this grade — taken as 0
Si≤1,000.5 %werkstoffnummer_catalog
Ni4,50-6,505.5 %werkstoffnummer_catalog
C≤0,0300.015 %werkstoffnummer_catalog
Cunot specified by this grade — taken as 0
Mn≤2,001 %werkstoffnummer_catalog

This grade specifies only a maximum for Si, C, Mn, so the midpoint of the permitted range is used — an estimate, not a specified content. Enter the value from your certificate when you have it.

Composition (% by mass)
Nitrogen is not taken from the grade: in weld metal it is set by the shielding gas and the process, not by the base material. Take it from the mill certificate or the welding procedure.

Si, Mn do not appear in this diagram's formulas, so what you enter there does not move the coordinates. The other diagram uses them — the difference between the two is deliberate, not an omission.

Why there is no Ferrite Number here

A Ferrite Number is a magnetically defined quantity on the scale set by ANSI/AWS A4.2 and ISO 8249 — not a volume percentage. Percent-ferrite was abandoned as imprecise, which is why the FN scale exists. These coordinates locate the weld metal on the diagram; they are not an FN.
